The dental office of Christine J. Coke, DDS, MD, PA held a blanket drive from September 1 – December 1, 2010. Dr. Coke asked her patients to help by donating a new blanket to keep children warm while going through cancer treatment. There was an amazing response, and they collected over 300 blankets! These were taken to Children’s Medical Center for children in the Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders to use during their chemotherapy. There were so many blankets donated that each child got to choose the blanket of their choice and take it home with them!
A very special thank you to Dr. Christine Coke, her office staff and patients for brightening the day of a childhood cancer patient with such a great gift!
Dr. Carrye Cost is the recipient of a Children’s Cancer Fund Research Fellowship Award, which includes the 2010-2011 academic year. She is currently studying the risk factors of infection and fever in children with cancer who have low blood counts as a result of their treatment. The goal of her research is to develop a risk model to predict a group of patients at low risk for a blood infection who might be safely managed without hospitalization. Decreasing hospitalizations will save more than $1,000 per day, decrease medication resistance and side effects for patients, and allow patients more time to be a “normal” kid outside of the hospital.
SBB Management Company hosted the 2nd Annual Golf Classic on Monday, September 20, 2010. This year we had sunny skies and great weather for the tournament. The event raised over $44,000 for Children’s Cancer Fund. CCF is dedicated to funding pediatric cancer research, treatment, education and patient care programs at the Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders at Children’s Medical Center and UT Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas.
Fred Shapiro and his wife, Dr. Karen Bradshaw hosted a sponsor party at their home on Sunday prior to the tournament as a special thank you to all of the tournament sponsors.
The SBB Annual Golf Classic was conceived as a way for the company to help give back to the community. Vendors and professionals that work with community associations managed by SBB sponsored the event again this year. More than 30 Board members that volunteer time in their community associations played alongside SBB employees and the vendor and professional representatives. What a great way for everyone to get to know one another better and forge some true relationships all while benefitting a great cause!
The event was held at the beautiful Lantana Golf Club in Lantana, Texas. A box lunch donated by Corner Bakery was enjoyed prior to the shotgun start at 1:00 p.m. More than 90 golfers received this year’s tournament shirt and a “Goodie Bag” that held gift cards and coupons to local golf stores as well as golf tees and other assorted goodies.
The $10,000 Name Sponsor for the tournament was SBB Management Company, AAMC and Fred Shapiro and Dr. Karen Bradshaw. The $5,000 Major Sponsor was Community Association Banc & CondoCerts, a division of Mutual of Omaha Bank.
The $2,500 DFW Sponsors were Guaranty Insurance Services, Inc. and Texas Capital Bank.
Each foursome was sponsored (Grand Sponsor) by a vendor or professional that does business with the associations managed by SBB. Play ended around 6:00 p.m. for most golfers. A delicious fajita buffet was served by the Lantana Golf Club immediately afterward. A silent auction was held before the tournament and during the dinner. Items in the auction included autographed baseballs, an autographed football, vacation stays, Visa gift cards, diamond jewelry and more. The 3rd Annual “Laugh Today, Live Forever” Comedy Show was held on September 15th at Hyena’s Comedy Nightclub in Mockingbird Station. The event raised over $6,000 through admission sales, raffle tickets, and the live and silent auction! 98.7 KLUV’s Promo Team came to offer fun games and prizes. Comedic performances by Locked Out Comedy, Angelia Walker and Flo Hernandez kept the crowd laughing all night!
The Comedy Show Chair, Cara “CC” Carmickle, opened the show by talking about the importance of September being Childhood Cancer Awareness Month. Everyone in the audience wore a gold ribbon in support of the cause. CC told the audience about how her family was affected by pediatric cancer when her nephew was diagnosed. Thankfully, he is now cancer free and enjoying just being a kid!
Children’s Cancer Fund would like to thank Cara “CC” Carmickle and the Comedy Show Committee for their hard work over the last several months and on the day of the event. We are very grateful to Hyena’s Comedy Nightclub for allowing us to have the event at their location for free. Our wonderful comedians also performed at no cost to CCF, and 98.7 KLUV gave us free advertising on their radio station. This allows CCF to give back as much money as possible to pediatric cancer research and treatment programs at the Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders at Children’s Medical Center and UT Southwestern Medical Center of Dallas!
