CCF donates $50,000 to Children’s Medical Center

Children’s Cancer Fund donated $50,000 to Children’s Medical Center to support the Child Life Assistant position in the Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders. CCF has funded this valued member of the CCBD team since 2002.

With the primary goal of minimizing the impact of illness on normal growth and development, Child Life professionals help children and families understand and process their healthcare experiences. The position provides psychosocial, emotional, and educational support, as well as positive distractions, to children and families in the clinic setting. The Child Life Assistant helps to relieve patient and family anxiety associated with medical procedures, and offers fun, developmentally appropriate activities which encourage play, promote healthy child development, and offer a break from the stresses of the hospital environment.

With the help of Children’s Cancer Fund, Children’s Medical Center is committed to making valuable support services like Child Life available to patients and families at no charge.

GOLF TOURNAMENT RAISES $38,900 FOR CCF

In honor of September being Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, SBB Management Company hosted their first annual golf tournament with 92 players at Lantana Golf Club on September 14, 2009. The idea for the event began with SBB’s CEO Fred Shapiro, but the hard work and planning with his staff made their event a reality. As an Advisory Board Member of Children’s Cancer Fund, Shapiro chose CCF as the beneficiary of this grand event and raised $38,900!

Mr. Shapiro and his wife, Dr. Karen Bradshaw hosted the sponsors of the tournament at their home the night prior.  It was a great evening for everyone to network and socialize before the event.

The golf tournament was an opportunity for community association members to give back. The sponsors included vendors, contractors and professionals. Several homeowners’ association members played in the tournament as well. It was a remarkable day for a worthy cause! After the final hole, an awards dinner at Lantana Golf Club recognized those who placed. The master of ceremonies, Drew Pearson, signed footballs and photographs in exchange for donations to Children’s Cancer Fund. After a video about CCF, the former Dallas Cowboy great shared his experiences and involvement with our luncheon and fashion show.

Mr. Shapiro’s daughter, Melinda, participates in CCF’s annual “Beyond the Rainbow” Luncheon and Fashion Show. The luncheon is CCF’s largest fundraiser, and the 22nd Annual will be held on Friday, April 23, 2010 at The Hilton Anatole Dallas. The theme this year is “Bright Stars. Bright Hope.” Children currently undergoing cancer treatment and the survivors are models on the runway escorted by celebrities and our sponsors.
